Most homeowners aim their one camera at the front wall, facing the street. It looks reassuring, but it's rarely where an actual break-in happens. Most intrusions happen at the back or side of a property, away from view of the road and neighbours.
The five spots we always recommend
- Front door — the most common entry point for opportunistic break-ins and package theft.
- Back door / kitchen entrance — usually the least visible, and the most targeted.
- Garage and driveway — covers vehicles and a second common entry route into the house.
- Side passages — narrow, dark, and exactly where someone would try to work unseen.
- Perimeter walls — catches anyone approaching before they even reach the building.
Beyond placement, check the specs: full-colour night vision, IP65 weatherproofing, a reliable phone app, and battery backup for loadshedding. A camera that goes dark the moment the power drops isn't protecting anything.
